Due to the increasing load on farmland and ground water from the spreading of animal manure, the Danish Government in the 1980ies initiated a program for development of biogas technology. The basic concept is to treat manure and industrial biological waste in such a way that – through a digestion process - an environmentally friendly fertilizer is developed, which is ready for spraying onto the farmland.
Extensive test programs have been carried out by the relevant authorities to ensure that the treated biomass is free from active pathogens and plant diseases so that the biomass can be utilized on any farm in the area.
A positive side effect of the biogas plants is that the biogas produced can be utilized in a gas engine based Combined Heat and Power (CHP) plant. The electricity produced in the CHP plant is CO2 neutral, contrary to the electricity produced from fossil fuels.
The BWSC biogas plant concept further includes: - Total hygienization in accordance with the above mentioned test programs
- Treatment of the biogas including removal of H2S in order to protect the gas engine from corrosion
- Treatment of all ventilation air to eliminate odour from tanks and buildings
- Fully automatic operation of the entire plant
- Simplified overall concept ensuring low operation and maintenance costs.
