2 new orders for BWSC - Grand Cayman + Curacao

06. September 2002

Grand Cayman

To meet the growing demand for electricity power in Grand Cayman the Caribbean Utilities Company Ltd. (CUC), the only public electrical utility in Grand Cayman, signed a 10-year Strategic Alliance Agreement in 1999 with MAN B&W Augsburg for the design and installation of diesel generating units on a turnkey basis (called the ’Year 2000 Expansion Program’). BWSC was selected as principal subcontractor responsible for project management, plant design, and supply of balance of plant.

In 2000, BWSC supplied a 24 MW power plant for Phase 1 of the Expansion Program, a plant based on 2 x MAN B&W 12V48/60 medium speed diesel generating units and auxiliary systems. In addition, the power house building was prepared for one additional engine.

In August 2002, BWSC received an order for Phase 2 of the Expansion Program consisting of 1 x MAN B&W 12V48/60 medium speed diesel engine plus all necessary auxiliaries to be installed in the already existing power house.

Taking Over is scheduled to take place in July 2003.

BWSC is happy to see that CUC has been satisfied with the delivery and performance of Phase 1 and that the Strategic Alliance Agreement has now proven its value and led to the order for Phase 2. If the demand for electricity power continues to grow as expected in Grand Cayman, Phase 3 of the Expansion Program will commence within the next couple of years.

Curacao

In August 2002 – following a competitive tender process - Aqualectra Production N.V., Curacao, signed an EPC contract with MAN B&W Augsburg (with BWSC as principle subcontractor) for the construction of a 33 MW diesel power plant.

The new power plant will be located at a green field site adjacent to a new 66 kV substation within the refinery on the island of Curacao, the Netherlands Antilles.

The project forms part of an overall agreement between Refineria Isla S.A. - a wholly owned subsidiary of PDVSA, Venezuela - and Integrated Utility Holding - the parent company of Aqualectra Production N.V. The new plant will replace an older steam plant located within the refinery.

The contract is for the design engineering, supply, construction, test and commissioning of 4 x 18V32/40 MAN B&W Diesel medium speed diesel engines with alternators and all necessary auxiliary equipment and systems installed in a power house.

MAN B&W Diesel undertakes the supply of the diesel engines and generators, whereas BWSC is responsible for project management, plant design, construction, test and commissioning and the supply of balance of plant.

Construction will commence later this year, and the plant will enter into commercial operation by third quarter of 2003.

This project is yet another important milestone for both MAN B&W Diesel AG and BWSC in the Caribbean and is a result of our continuous cooperation in the region.
